For the 1915 season, the Federal League started to look into placing a team in the New York City market. The Newark team was originally going to be transplants of the Kansas City Federal League team. But when the backers of the Kansas City franchise started to resist, the League decided to move the Indianapolis franchise to Newark.

The Newark Peppers were owned by oil baron Harry Sinclair.
